Guitar techniques

Here you will learn guitar techniques for beginners.

Slide !

You can choose which finger to use for sliding, I suggest to “plan ahead”. Look at the tab, you see a slide from the third to fifth fret, than you play the third fret again. Here I would slide with my ring finger, because it will automatically place my index finger on the third fret.

If the note after is the 7th fret, I would slide with my index finger and play the next note with my ring finger.

Hammer-on !

The name explains itself. You literally hammer your finger on the note to give it a sound effect, it sounds different than just holding down the note and playing it.

Pull-off !

A pull-off is similar to a hammer on, I always think of them as opposites.

Do not just take your finger of the note, pull the string down a little This will make the string vibrate and thus make a better, louder sound.

Doing this also allows you to keep pulling the string without playing it and still have sound.

Ideally you will always play a pull-of with your ring finger. It all sounds the same, but I have never seen a song where you pull off to an open string. If this was the case, you can play it with your index finger.

Bend !

Bend the string using 2 or more fingers.

Make sure to bend the string high enough to make it sound like the note 2 frets further.

Some bends you let go at the top, some you bend back down.
