Here you will learn guitar tabs for beginners.

This is what a standard guitar tab will look like. Notice how the thickest string is at the bottom and the thinnest on top. “Why are they upside down ?” Good question, some say it is because of the legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix, who played the guitar left handed. Some say it is because the tabs are easier to read this way.

Here you can see the tab of a well know riff. The numbers no do longer represent your fingers. They represent the frets you are playing. You read from left to right, start by playing the E string on the first fret. Then continue from left to right. Can you guess what riff you just played ? I know you didn’t know the tempo, try to listen to this song and play afterwards.

Here we see the same tabs once again, but now you can see the techniques. The red technique at the start is hammer-on. You ideally played the first note with your index finger, now use your ring finger or pinky to play the second note, without playing the string again. Videos on this can be found on the “Techniques” page. The blue slash is a slide, you slide from fret 3 to 5. You play the string only on fret 3. The slide will create a cool sound effect and you will hear the note you end your slide on.

On this tab, we can see green arrows curving up. This is a bend. You play the note on the 18th fret, best with your ring finger and bend it up using your index, middle and ring finger.
The note you hear now should sound like the note 2 frets further. So the 18th fret on the B string now sounds like the 20th fret on the B string. The tab you see here is the start of one of the most iconic solos ever written.
